Overview
The 104 speaking project has multiple steps that result in your producing two pieces of work: 1) a fully-developed essay on your topic, 2) a 5-6 minute presentation in week 7. Your essay will be written in class on the day of the “Final Writing Exam.” Details about the essay will be given about a week before the exam.
You will need to:
• Turn in a list of topics (to be approved)
• Turn in a list of sources about your topic (to be approved)
• Read and/or watch the sources to learn information about the topic
• Turn in short paragraphs about what you learned from the sources
• Write an essay on your topic (in class, under exam conditions)
• Prepare and present a final spoken presentation
Marks:
Step 1 (Topics) - 5 marks
Step 2 (Sources) - 5 marks
Step 3 (Paragraphs about sources) - 30 marks
Step 4 (Presentation) - 60 marks

You should submit 3 choices of topic, in priority order. Your topic needs to be academic in nature and related to the themes in the course. Topics should not be related to religion or politics in any way. You need to be able to find articles, videos, or audio files in English related to your topic. In addition, written sources should be a minimum of 500 words. Audio-visual sources should contain a minimum of 2.5 minutes of spoken text. The themes are: Transportation; Environment; Health & Fitness; Discovery & Invention; Economics. Each student's topic must be unique (no duplicates.)
In addition to choosing a topic, you must choose an approach to the topic. In other words, how will you look at or talk about the topic? You must choose one of the 3 approaches below:
1. Advantages & Disadvantages OR 2. Cause & Effect OR 3. Problem & Solution

Step 2 - Sources - due Monday, January 21st - Submit sources here...
Find 4 good sources about your topic. The information must be in English and can be written, audio or video. Written sources should be a minimum of 500 words. Audio-visual sources should contain a minimum of 2.5 minutes of spoken text. There are many websites where you can find information including www.bbc.com/learningenglish and www.discoveryeducation.org. You can also use Google or Google scholar search to help you find information. Choose sources that are easy for you to understand and that are fairly academic. Your sources must be approved.
How Step 2 will be marked:
Step 3 - Paragraphs about sources - due Thursday, February 7th
Learn and Write Information about your Topic
Watch, listen to, and/or read your sources and write a paragraph about the information you learned from each of your sources. Your paragraphs must also be approved.
Maximum of 6 marks per paragragh (24 total) - paragraphs must be on time and meet the criteria here - in order to get full marks
Ms. Laura will be checking your paragraphs to make sure they match the source
Use your own words - do not copy/paste
Note form or bullet points are okay
Decide on your opinion on the subject - be prepared to make your case
Summarize any background information given in the source which describes/explains the topic
CAUSE/EFFECT: summarize the causes and/or effects listed in the source and give examples/details for each cause or effect
PROBLEM/SOLUTIONS: summarize the problems and/or solutions listed in the source and give examples/details for each problem or solution
ADVANTAGES/DISADVANTAGES: summarize the advantages/disadvantages and provide an example or detail for each one
